FAQ

Southwest Chinese Baptist Church exists to beat God’s heartbeat for God’s glory, church maturity, and Gospel priority.   Our pulse is to connect to God, to the church body, and the community. We are conveniently located off West Airport between 59/69 and Beltway 8.

The answer lies in our name, “Southwest Chinese Baptist Church.” First, we are “Southwest,” in that we are committed to serving the people living in Southwest Houston. We are “Chinese” in that we have ministered to mainly Cantonese-speaking at our founding in 1981. We have the most experience reaching out to Cantonese and American born Chinese (“ABC’s”), but our desire and priority is to welcome multiethnic diversity.   We are “Baptist” in denominational affiliation, and ascribe to the Baptist Faith and Message (1963).   Lastly, we are a “church” in that we believe, with all other Bible-believing, Gospel-centered churches, that God has saved us by grace through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ alone.    We are more than a gathering or a social club. We are created by God to glorify Him and enjoy Him forever, rescued by Jesus from sin, and called to spread His Gospel to all nations.

On most Sundays, you will see people dressed from casual to business-casual. Whether you are wearing jeans, a full-on suit, cowboy boots, or anything in between, we warmly welcome you to worship with us.

If it is your first time worshiping with us at SWCBC, park in the reserved spots for our visitors. They are located on the first row on your left after you drive in the parking lot (look for signs).

Our English worship service starts at 9:30AM, in the main sanctuary. When you drive into the church, you will see the main doors that lead into the foyer and the sanctuary. If you have children, it is best to arrive by 9:15AM to sign in your children. Our Chinese worship service starts at 11:00AM, also in the main sanctuary. For more information, visit our Worship page.

The 9:30AM service is typically in English. At certain times of the year, there may be a guest speaker that is Chinese-speaking, but don’t worry, we provide on stage translation. The 11:00AM Chinese service is conducted primarily in Cantonese, and there is Mandarin (in-ear) translation available.

Our first priority is to see you connect to God. We know you want to hear what God says to you. To that end, we focus on everything around God’s written, errorless, and authoritative Word, the Bible.

No matter which congregation you attend, you will be warmly greeted and handed a bulletin, which describes the order of service. We typically start off with a call to worship, which is usually a short Bible reading to help us focus on God. Then there is corporate singing, in which we declare God’s greatness and lift high the Cross of Jesus. After singing, church members worship through offering. As our guest, please do not feel obligated to give to SWCBC, and feel free to just pass the offering bag on. After special music or Bible reading, you will listen to the pastor’s message, followed by prayer and a response song. The presider will give key announcements to connect you to the life of the church, and the pastor will close the service with a benediction, which is a blessing to remind us that we are to live for Jesus.

One of our passions at SWCBC is for our children and youth. For children, we have a dedicated nursery and pre-K team that will help make your infants and toddlers feel right at home. For older children, we have age-appropriate worship and classes during both worship services. Youth (7th grade and older) worship together with the English congregation, then break into classes according to age. For more details on these ministries, see children and youth.

SWCBC offers SAT/ESL classes for high school students. You will also see our church serving our Southwest Houston community, volunteering at Second Mile Mission in Stafford, packing food for the Houston Food Bank, or ministering to Bhutanese refugees in nearby Chinatown. To see how we make Christ’s love known to our community, check out missions.

For both our English and Cantonese worship services, look for our friendly connect team, who are easy to spot because of their brightly colored tags and engaging smiles. You can also look at the bulletin board next to the foyer, or ask any one of our church members to guide you to the right class. Our hope is that you connect to a class that will help you dig deeper into God’s Word.

First, worship regularly with us on Sundays. Through Sundays, you can connect with God, hear the preaching of God’s Word, and meet the pastors and church members. Here at SWCBC, we share life together as a church family and desire to experience vibrant community throughout the week. If you are English speaking, check out our Community Groups, which are small groups who meet in various homes. Or if you speak Chinese, come visit one of our fellowship groups that meet either at church or in homes. To see a list of our weekly gatherings, take a look at our fellowship page.
